Matthew Dunsinane is a masked highwayman called the Grim Ghost in 1743 - robbing from the rich and keeping the money! He is lured into a trap by a beautiful woman and is captured and hanged. He makes a deal with Satan to continue as the Grim Ghost, sending evil souls to Hell - but in the 20th century.
