The Marauder's Map is a magical document that reveals all of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Not only does it show every classroom every hallway and every corner of the castle but it also shows every inch of the grounds as well as all the secret passages that are hidden within its walls and the location of every person in the grounds portrayed by a dot. It is also capable of accurately identifying each person and is not fooled by animagi polyjuice potions or invisibility cloaks; even the Hogwarts ghosts are not exempt from this. One of the map's possible flaws lies in the fact that it cannot differentiate people who bear similar names (the shared names are not given a Junior or Senior at the end). Also it does not seem to show unplottable rooms since it was Dobby and not the map that showed where the Room of Requirement was or even existed. The Chamber of Secrets never appeared on the map; this could be because the creators never knew of it or it could be unplottable as well since when Ron and Hermione were in it collecting basilisk fangs they did not appear on the map like people did not appear when in the Room of Requirement. The map can also reveal secret passages the Marauders found though it only did this on one known occasion (in his third year Harry Potter was shown how to use the statue of the humpbacked witch to enter for the real Harry Potter geek :)
